My Magic World, My CIFLE
Now I regretted that I wasted time before. That day the alphabet was flying in the sky. At last when I arrived at CIFLE, I was very embarrassed because my English ability. From the moment that I step on first step, my mouth is frozen. I can not speak a word.
One instructor said to me "If you don't understand, ask them." But I couldn't hear his voice. Just I can only saw his face with silent. I already knew that mean but didn't hear. The sensation of fear I felt on the first day I can not forget now. I needed many time for that I adapt his voice. Now, I can understand and hear his lecture more than before.
I often did a foolish thing or talk foolish. My mouth and my body could not control strangely. Whenever I was presentation or I spoke, my head becomes white paper. I taught 'I must escape from this hell', 'what can I do?' I had been a strong earthquake during the lesson. But I didn't want to give up. So I studied very hard everyday and every weekend for I didn't want to be a fool. The flowers of books came into bloom in the room everyday. But I can't speak English well. Every that time I forgot my confident little by little. I knew that English can not conquer easily but my mind was impatient. But CIFLE give to me second turning point of my life.
CIFLE help me as can know little more myself, how should study English and I informed method and direction. I will be a teacher that I can understand student. I was very much lacking student in CIFLE. Remembered my class children and I could understand their mind. Is how gloomy and was it difficult? I was sorry that I talked to them before.
CIFLE has tight schedule only we can study about English. And also we should think in English. I will form a habit that. I will think in English and I speak in English as possible as. I realized and learned many things through the instructor's attitude about lecture. Among them Angie was the best. I will remember her teaching method. She was very comfortable and she had open mind. She made a very impression on me. Of course also Chris. He was very charismatic and thorough. His teaching of method was interesting and effective. But his mind closed so I could not talk with him easily. I can't forget life of CIFLE. Now I will stick on the album by one memory. Next time, when we meet by accident, I hope to greet gladly. Thank you for your teaching! Have a happy day always!
What Happen to Her Last Night?
Hearing the alarm, she tried to open her eyes lying her back on the bed. It's one of the most difficult things for her to awake from sleep in the morning. The sun was spreading its beams on the glasses of the dormitory windows. She erected herself slowly from the bed and made the bed.
Someone shouted, "This way." and snatched her wrist.
"Are you a human? You can say a word!" she yelled out. He was a police officer at EEC. "Sure, I can speak and move just like you." the policeman answer with a big smile.
"Yes, we all get lives from 9 o'clock every Friday night to Sunday midnight." the boy and the girl on the corner of intersection spoke to her. "If so, why do you have to pretend to be inanimated beings during the daytime?" she asked, arranging her ideas. The police man simply replied, "We don't make any money. Instead of living idle lives, we must stay only a certain area and hang around just at night."
"How can I get out of here? I have to go now." she begged.
"We equipped everything in here. Stay here with us. Don't go. You can enjoy your life without any effort." the boy on the intersection explained his idle life.
No one did pay attention to her; they only sat down on the bench or talked to each other sharing a meal on the grass. She squeaked the door of EEC, "Don't make a noise out there." someone shouted in the distance.
She tiptoed one by one through the corridor, holding her breath. She eventually reached the stairs which got connected to the second floor. She put one step on the stair and then the second. At the moment the third step was landed, the stairs started to squirm. She jumped down to the floor and rushed to the first floor. She rolled down to the first floor lobby and lost her consciousness.
When she gained consciousness, she found herself embraced in one armchair in the first lobby. She struggled desperately out of the chair and in vain. The armchair whispered her, "Don't be scared. I don't hurt you." The sofa next to the armchair added, "He has waited for you to sit on his seat, you know?" The loveseat opposite to the armchair threw a word, "Sun, why don't you dance with him? It is his wishes."
Chairs from the cafeteria played the violins and the information desk the piano. Unavoidably she stepped one, two, three, one, two, three dancing with the armchair. Do you imagine the scene at night? After finishing a dance, Mr. armchair let her go and ushered to the entrance of the building. He didn't forget to give her a clue of unlocking the door inside. She hugged him tight and whispered how thankful she was.
As soon as she opened the door of the building, the security alarm went off. Someone with a light from another building ran over toward the dormitory.

The efficacy of fermented foods
These days people have specific interest in health. There are enough something to eat. But actually there are not enough safe eatings . So many people have anxiety about eatings. On the other hand people know the effet about fermented food according to laboratory experiments.
Korean traditional fermented food is offered in the elementary school. But students don’t like it. The menus are Kimchi, Doenjang soup, Cheongkukjang. They eat them forcibly little by little.
This purpose of project is what students eat happily. They will be grown up healthily after eating good food.
Defination of fermented foods
Fermentation is the chemical conversion of carbohydrates into alcohols or acids.
Generally, we call the fermented food refers to the conversion of sugar to alcohol using yeast, bacteria, or under anaerobic conditions. The science of fermentation is known as Zymology. There are many kind of fermented food. There is a beverages such as wine, beer and cider. Also, employed in preservation to create lactic acid in sour foods such as pickled cucumbers, kimchi and yogurt.

Case of protection and treatment through the fermented foods
This is “herbal kimchi” made of 15 kinds of herbs which grow in Doridol Village of Pocheon, Gyeonggi Province.
The ``slow food'' movement is a growing trend agaist ``fast food.'' It seeks to consume healthy foods from plants, seeds and animals and other farming products
Kimchi is undoubtedly one of the most nutritious dishes among the slow foods in the world. The US magazine Health once named kimchi on its list of top five ``World's Healthiest Foods'' for being rich in vitamins, aiding digestion, and even possibly retarding cancer growth. Kimchi is a staple of the Korean diet. Kimchi is a fermented mixture of ingredients such as red pepper powder, cabbage, green onion, radish, and garlic. Its efficacy is well known, and Koreans consume 10-15kg of Kimchi per person per year. According to the Korean Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries (MIFAFF), kimchi is highly nutritious, strengthens the immune system, prevents cancer, lowers blood cholesterol levels, and delays the aging process promoting longevity. The MIFAFF also states that Kimchi contains ingredients providing antibiotic effects, preventing hyperacidity, and restricting the growth of undesirable bacteria in the intestines.
Well-fermented Kimchi may protect people from the bird fle or SASs. No Korean has died trom the bird flu or SASs, despite the fact that many Koreans have visited countries hard-hit both diseases.
Well-fermented Kimchi may protect people from the kind of cancer. There is a place that's attempting to make this healthy kimchi into a healthier one. Herbal kimchi is made with 15 different herbs along with a special fermentation process.``There has been no one who has suffered from any kind of cancer in the village's history probably because the villagers eat many herbs,' a villager Kim said. Kimchi is excellent our food in the world. Kimchi is Korean have one of the most
Expert's view
I want to know expert’s view about fermented foods. I would like find out the scientific outcomes about fermented foods’ effect. Also I wondered fermented foods can replaced in chemical medicine as a alternative medicine
I found a scientist who inquire out fermented food’s efficacy. He is Dr.Eli.Metchnikoff , a nobel prize winner of 1908 in physiology and medicine “ the prolongation of life”
He found out like that; “Benefits of intestinal microflora long life of the Bulgarians and their frequent use of fermented milk product “yoghurt” bacillus bulgaricus- Lactobacillus bulgaricus Birth of probiotics”
Dr.Eli.Metchnikoff is a biologist of Russia, he found out fact through the his study “the prolongation of life” This is that People grow old because of decaying one’s intestinal while one is alive. So, he suggest to eat the dairy products for preventing to decay person’s intestinal.
He was a first scientist who examined scientifically that lactic acid bacteris is able to control human’s the againg process.
While I have searched various material related to expert’s view, I can summary the same good points of fermented foods. It is a blow like that;
1. Fermented foods are excellent foods to provent critical disease like a cancer, hypertension, sugar diabetes and a cardia disorder.
2. Fermented foods have various nutrition like calcium, iron content, phosphoric and mineral
3. Fermented foods help people’s digestion easily and they also clean the intestinal with birth of probiotics.
I think fermented food is developing as a functional foods based on expert scientists and researchers’s fingings and visions about fermented foods.
Our opinion after research
There are many fermented food around our country. Even though It is getting to disappear the fermented food on the meal table in Korean. The Kimchi is very important food in our country's constitution with 된장, 청국장, 고추장. We are very sad that Fermented food of korean is far away around us. Let's eat the traditional fermented food ourselves at first. And then, let the students realize ancestor’s wisdom. Fially let’s inform the efficacy to students and parents.

Purpose at CIFLE where I am here
I had had a concern to learn English. When I was 6 grader at elementary school, I didn’t learn English at school as a public curriculum. I had wanted to study English well. So, I studied phonics by myself without teacher’s aids and then I had learned English at secondary and high school. At that time, I learned just grammar to be able to test in exam instead of communicative skills. I was 24 years old When I awkward learning English indeed because English is getting more important language in social trend. English is adopted like a qualification to gain a good occupation. Most of large corporations want the candidate to speak English well, I thought I had to learn English in order to gain a better job when I graduated from university. presently, I also feel English is necessary to globalize. By the way, I have changed my view about English. I think English is just a method to communicate with foreigners not to gain a scholarship. I want communicative competency to understand and speak what I want to say
I came CIFLE not only to improve my language skills, but also to share many ideas for instruction method with the other teachers. I have made an effort to conduct this program course positively. Because it is useful to gain many things rather than passive attitude. I am satisfied in my life at CIFLE and I will eager to do my best during staying here.
I think CIFLE is very wonderful place to learn English for teachers. CIFLE has intelligent instructors, kind staff and convenient facilities. (dormitory, fitnessroom, multi-media room, project room and so on) I won’t forget CIFLE’s good memory about peers and amazing activities for a long time. I love CIFLE, so I will recommend my peer teachers to CIFLE is the best place to learn English and share good idea with the other teachers and native instructors.
English Immersion Programs in EFL
Most of parents want children study English from kindergarten or earlier that, so children study English in school and private institute after school. Children are very stressful to learn English, they spend many times and efforts by individually.
Now we need English learning programs appropriate for the Korea English educational system. EIP is an approach to foreign language instruction in EFL, an immersion program could be a solution for the Korean situation. So this research will consider EIP and the examples of EIP in other countries and elementary school conducting EIP in Seoul to find out an appropriate model to apply to Korean education system.
What are the research questions of English Immersion Programs?
1. What is the immersion?
2. What are strengths and weaknesses of English Immersion Programs?
3. How was English Immersion Programs applied to EFL(in other countries and Seoul)
4. What are some concerns about the implementation of English immersion programs in Korea and how can we accomplish effective implementation?
What is the Immersion?
1) Theoretical background
Immersion is a form of bilingual education in which students who speak the language of the majority of the population receive part of their instruction through the medium of a second language and part through their first language. Both the second language and first language are used to teach regular school subjects, such as Mathematics, science, or physical education, in addition to languages concurrently or during the same academic year. Different subjects are taught through the medium of each language. Generally speaking, at least 50% of instruction during a given academic year must be provided through the second language for the programme to be regarded as immersion. Programmes in which one subject and language arts are taught through the second language are identified as enriched second language programmes. (Genesee:1987)
In an Immersion program, students learn content through the target language, in a minimum of 50% of their classes. This provides them with the chance to experience the culture of other countries. There are some results that students achieve high level proficiency in both mother language and target language.
Why are English Immersion Programs concerned? It is possible to achieve 4 skills (Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing)of English, to master other content and understand other cultures. Because students learn English subject as well as other subject in English; immersion is most intensive form of content-based English.
2) Types of Immersion Program
The types of English Immersion Programs are divided by 1) Early total immersion 2) Early partial Immersion 3) Delayed Immersion 4) Late immersion. Early total immersion has been the most popular in EFL. But these types are flexible, it depends on their special educational system.
Total Immersion means that 100% of their classes are taught in English, while Partial Immersion refers to programs which have varying degrees (between 50% and 100%) of the other subject taught in English. Early Immersion is initiated in the earliest grades of elementary school. Delayed Immersion is introduced in the latter grades of elementary school, and Late Immersion is started in secondary school.
The classes are not repetitive in nature, which means that they don’t learn the content in first language and again in second language. However, no type is absolutely preferable to others. It depends on a variety of different factors culturally or economically related to each country or each school.
What are strengths and weaknesses of English Immersion Programs?A little quantity of students may benefit from the immersion program. Because it focuses on sociocultural aspects of language learning. A well-implemented maintenance immersion program provides non-English speaking with an equal educational opportunity like English speaking.
Students may develop their academic language proficiency. As Cummins said, academic English is typically acquired over a period of five to seven years, and it is more comprehensible by using home language instruction. Substantial home language knowledge aids in understanding the second language. Learning to read in English at an early age is facilitated when a student has already acquired the phonemic structure of their home language.
Students receive substantial language support in their native language, they may ease into second language learning without too much pressure. Once the student can read in her native language, they can also learn to read in other language because literacy automatically transfers to other languages.
But immersion students tend to lack the social and accuracy language use which the native speakers. Also students increase language use after leaving school.
How were English Immersion Programs applied to EFL?
There are many countries to conduct Second Language Immersion, also many Asia countries are processing English Immersion Programs which are appropriate their culture and economy. It is important to study successful or fail examples in other countries, and find out how we can apply EIP in Korea with special circumstance and variable factors.
Canada (Quebec) is the birthplace of immersion education is Canada In 1965, a group of English-speaking parents succeeded in initiating an experimental immersion kindergarten for their students. Because in Quebec where the French-speaking majority were asserting their rights and taking more power in the political and economic fields, so they wanted their children to achieve a high level of French, as well as English. French Immersion has spread across the country; over 320,000 students in Canada are in some form of immersion program. Their French Immersion program includes that all students have the option of entering early immersion, middle immersion, or late immersion.

Katoh Gakuen is a private elementary school a city located in shizuoka Prefeture. Katho Gakuen is not a international school. It follows the Japanese Ministry of education, but in grades 1~3, all subjects except Japanese and Language Arts are taught in English (English : Japanese = 70:30). From 4 to 6 grades students are studying English, math, science, computer in English (English : Japanese = 50:50), especially Japanese, social studies, Art, Music, PE is taught in Japanese. Students have to use only English in immersion classroom and with immersion teachers. Katoh Gakune’s immersion is 16 years old, so it is still in the experimental stage. But until now, the program is successful so that students have good achievement other subject as well as English (refer to http://www.bi-lingual.com/)

3) Other countries
There are over 400 schools in 27 states that offer total, partial or two-way immersion programs in 11 different languages. And English immersion programs spread to Japan, China and Singapore, Hong kong, Malaysia, Korea, where English is not their first language. Each country has its own cultural, economic environment, Singapore has 3 languages and they need one public language, so English Immersion is very effective for that country. But the numbers of family that use English their daily life are increasing. Also English immersion is successful in Hong Kong, Now Beijing the number of 25 high school has launched a Bilingual Teaching program in the city.
Malaysia gave up English Immersion Programs in 2009. They have taught some subjects for six years but it has dragged down student’s performance and it is particularly unfair on children who are not proficient in the language.
4) Young Hoon Elementary school in Seoul
Young Hoon Elementary school which is private school implemented English immersion in Korea. They have used early-partial immersion program. One class is divided into two sides, each taught by a Korean and a native speaker.
According to research, students enjoyed English and showed on signs of development of Korean language-sills. Students attentive and interested in teaching conducted in English, and they were open and receptive to native-speaker teachers. Thus the primary goal of the program-developing an interest in English and other cultures in an open and creative environment-was achieved.
What are some concerns about the implementation of English immersion programs in Korea and how can we accomplish effective implementations?
There are some concerns about the implementation of English immersion programs in Korea. First, how to cover all the students from kindergarten to secondary school. Second, when to begin English immersion programs. Third, a possible negative effect of immersion programs on children’s development of first language.
Then, how can we accomplish effective implementations to English immersion programs in Korea. First, native language skills should be protected and the equal value must be given to the development. Second, professional development teacher training is necessary. Korean English teachers need to be continuously trained for their English skills and native English teachers need to be trained in teaching as well as cultural factors and should continuously use English as a medium of teaching English and subject matters. Third, district administrators need to become more closely involved with the actual practice of education. There needs to be coordination between school levels and connections among schools, district administrators should emphasize the learning being achieved and must show their dedication to mission. In addition, at the district level, administrators need to provide the funding for more qualified teachers, for the translation of materials, for professions development and for innovation within the classroom. Fourth, parental involvement is crucial to the success of English immersion programs, because are resources, both to their children and to school personnel. They can act as communicators and more. fifth, materials of comparable quality to those used in the regular courses should be available to provide qualifying information in English as regular course. Sixth, newly modified textbook will be necessary. Newly modified textbook will be necessary in order to teach subject courses in English. The materials should be developed which relate the content of the English class functionally to other subjects in the curriculum, so that English is not taught as a self-contained subject in itself. In addition, these textbook should well reflect curriculum of education in regular Korean schools and ensure that the students in English immersion programs receives corresponding information as well as in Korean.
Conclusion
English immersion programs are very effective method to enhance the overall language development of elementary school students under the EFL environment in Korea. This research includes how other countries effectively apply English immersion programs to their education system. To attain visible effective results, students should be provide ample opportunities for using English not only in the classrooms, but also in specific social and cultural situations.
As research has repeatedly shown that a language is learned most effectively when it is tied to meaningful content and adoptable usage for students’ lives, our English education should not just reside in the language teaching in an English language classroom, but should be integrated in the rest of the curriculum. Therefore, it is necessary to provide more meaningful activities and natural input as much as possible during a schooling period, otherwise it is difficult to produce desirable results.
For example, Singaporeans need to use an official language so they use English not only in schools, but also in every place and Finnish have a lot of chances to listen and speak English in their lives through the media. That is, Singaporeans and Finnish can succeed in English immersion program because they are continuously exposed to the English using and speaking environment, so they can more easily acquire English ability than some other countries.
The most important thing for Korean students is to devise an appropriate English immersion programs and to apply it to specific Korean conditions.
As pointed out here, some concerns, such as children’s development of first language, native teachers’ teaching ability, Korean teachers’ English speaking ability, financial problems especially excessively imposed on parents and newly modified textbook, etc., about the implementation of English immersion programs are expected to be reduced or partially solved in the future.

An Orview of the CIFLE Program
CIFLE staff provides good quality of program, facilities, and food. Lots of attendants are satisfied with life at CIFLE and the good environment. Also there are some complaints that the organization of the program is not elaborate enough. Why do they say that?
The program is divided into two parts; one part covers English teaching method, the other part is to improve the teacher’s English proficiency. In the teaching method part, there are 10 subjects such as Teacher talk, TEFL practicum, Language activities, Story teller, Performance assessment, lesson analysis, Textbook Analysis, Micro teaching, and CBL. About the teacher’s English proficiency part, there are :
First, the subject’s boundary is not clear. Some subjects are overlapping and duplicated. Sometimes the trainee knows the theory of that subject in Korean, but only changed to English. The problem is that the teacher’s proficiency doesn’t support enough to explain their opinion or theoretical background. At this point, the trainees don’t get both teaching method and English proficiency. And they have similar kinds of presentations, it is not effective and useful for trainees.
Second, instructors let the trainees prepare their presentation from time to time. This is necessary for trainees, because they don’t have enough time to do homework or to study lessons. But in order to present for microteaching, they spend a lot of time during the lesson (Language activities, Teacher talk, Microteaching) to prepare their presentation. Certainly, preparation and self study connect to learning, but the time in this course is limited. So it needs more detailed construction in the CIFLE program.Third, let’s look at the communicative competence part. The most important thing is the successful experience. But one trainee said “I am very depressed because I have confirmed my low level of English proficiency in the class.” Many trainees agree with that. Another trainee said “The most difficult problem is that the contents don’t reflect the differences of the trainee’s English level.”
Of course, the main goal of the CIFLE intensive course is achieved successfully. But some problems are an obstacle. The problems must be solved in order to make teacher’s training successful.
Now, the CIFLE boats are sailing in the English sea smoothly. If the program is fixes up the weaknesses, the people in boat would be comfortable and satisfied.
English is Difficult to Speak
CIFLE’s life is fun, interesting but sometimes difficult. I have difficulty in listing, speaking and writing English. All lessons are always difficult to me.
Small for example, August 7, 2009, I had our 4th writing lesson with Chris. This time should make my e-mail address at Google. But I met with a problem. He did not exactly explain how to make an e-mail address. Maybe he thought that we already know about make an e-mail address method.
Korea web sites and Google are different. If I want to have an e-mail address at Naver.com, I just enter and join. Automatically I can make an e-mail address. But If I want an e-mail address at Google.com, first I join as a member, and again try to make an e-mail address. After I tried it several times, I understood. Thus, I made an e-mail address at Google.com.
I’m worried about upcoming instruction at CIFLE. But there are fun and interesting lesson. Angie’s lesson is ease because easily word, slow speaking. So I feel ease and fun. Life at CIFLE is all a new approach to me. I want to adapt well at CIFLE. I feel seriously about my English level. After this course, I determined that reenter at on-line university for studying English. Friends tell me that not effect method for English ability level up. But my opinion is different their opinion. I like literature. So I will do well at literature studying at on-line university.

CIFLE story of homeroom teacher
English education for teachers occurs in two courses at CIFLE during summer vacation. One is course for middle and high school teachers and the other is course for elementary school teachers.
However most of homeroom teachers come in this course for elementary school teachers more than English teachers. They differ English level and purpose of education. But they get an educatoin with passion. Now I introduce to you a brave teacher who enters CIFLE only interest about English.
Ten years ago, she got the developed English education for 120 hours and the English conversation education for 30 hours.
She says, she has passion of English learning. But education is difficult in CIFLE. Because she has poor ability to listen and speak. Though she is difficult she is happy when she feels better in English.
She says, she has knowledge what is Montessori education, writing, debate, PBL, and lots of games. Teachers separate with family and have painful education for twelve hours a day. But they achieve learning of English passionately after they return summer vacation.
The importance of English is enormous day by day in this global period. Government of Mr. Lee has focused it so high. In spite of it the private education is expanded. At this time I wish many valuable English teachers who be trusted by all will be educated in CIFLE. Forwards the best programs fitted to teachers must be prepared and they can have chances to be learned.
My enjoyable life in cifle

At my summer vacation I had the opportunity to have a intensive teaching program in CIFLE(Chungnam Institute of Foreign Language Education), this particular English Village is in kongju and has been opened since March of 2008. One of my first English villages experience in Konju. An English program is an institute with in house camping facilities and they give teachers an opportunity to experience real life situations while practicing English, these are situations such as At the Airport, In a Restaurant, At the Doctor's Office, etc.
Here they have some props that are almost real and the teaches practice their English as much as possible in these situations.
Sometimes we visited Mueaum , Lotte-world, Ambacy of America, So We took a rest from lots of assignments. That gave trainees an opportunity to listen to a lesson '7secrets of improving english writing' by Adam tunor in Hanyang University. That was really impressed and too easy , practical lectors.
Also, we practiced our English language skills. I was able to help out where necessary and was also interviewed. During my interview, I spoke about my thoughts on the experience and also how I thought teachers felt by having this opportunity. It was a great experience and I had great fun. My only regret is not bringing my camera and taking some pictures.
Morever, I'll never forget all the members of my class. They were gracius, considerate and cooperative. A bavery tiger Sung-sik, intelligent helper Min-jung, shiny but beautiful smiler Mi-won, kind brother Kyoung-mi, pretty workholic Mung-sun, smart mother Kyoung-ok, energetical girl eun-ju, cute little sister Jung-hii and pretty genious jae-hyun.
We had a great time in the whole CIFLE area. Thanks to this wonderful program and kind native teachers. I had met many precious people and experienced a lot. I'd like to my thank you for living and learning in this place.
Have You Ever Been to the 'English Eperience Center' at CIFLE?
The English experience Center will give you the skills you need to successfully reach your English goals, whether your goal is to attend an American university, use English for your career, or simply be able to travel and socialize in English. Our programs give you the expert instruction and personal attention you need to succeed!
Mysterious night at dormitory of CIFLE
I took a elevator and push the button number 4 because I've heard that my room was on the fourth floor. At the front of my room, I opened the door and came into the room. I noticed that I was a first visitor today because my roommate didn't arrive here, yet. I was looking around in the room. There are only two double-decked beds and a bathroom, two closets, two pillows. I opened the closet and put my suitcase into there. I thought that I should be a curious traveler at CIFLE from now on. I wanted to look around dormitory because I have a few minutes, about ten minutes , to the opening ceremony. I directly went down the first floor and looked for another facilities. I found that there was a fitness room, a laundry room, a cafeteria. I was very happy to find the fitness room where I could exercise. At that moments, I was expecting to exercise at the fitness room everyday.
After the opening ceremony, I actually could be born a trainee, a curious traveler, at CIFLE , an English island what we called.
I had a big plan to exercise at CIFLE, however, I realized that was only dream a few days later. Because CIFLE didn't allowed to me exercising at the fitness room. Many homeworks and taskes were always waited for me. How can I go to the fitness room ?
I finally got a chance to go to it when I finished my homework earlier than usual. It was past about twelve p.m. when I looked over the clock. I took a elevator and pushed the button the number 1. I could stand in front of the fitness room. I came into the fitness room and found that there was no one in there . It was a misterious but I didn't care. I came to the athletic equipment and push the button. And then I slowely walked on and ran quickly on the equipment. I wanted to stop exercise because I'd like to take a shower. When I was about to get out the fitness room, the lights were turned off. I didn't know what happen to there. Suddenly, I was scraed what would take place there. I wanted to get out of there and slowely walked to the door because It was very dark in the fitness room. Where is the door? How could I find it. The darkness and the silence of the night made my blood run cold. I felt that I was followed by someone. It was very misterous mood at that night. I faced the elevator, however, the elevator didn't work. I couldn't go up the stairs from the 1st floor to the fourth floor. I ran up as quick as I could. If I misunderstand someone seems like a ghost, I felt like a fear something. Don't go alone some where no one is at night lately. You might some stranger at CIFLE.
Air-conditioner in CIFLE
I particiapated CIFLE at this summer. CIFLE's program is very systemic and so I enjoy the CIFLE's life. But I have a problem in CIFLE.
In CIFLE, all the day, we(trainee including me) are nearly becomming Ice-man.^^ Because It is air-conditioner. Air-condition in CIFLE always working. When we study, air-conditioner is working. When we take a break time, but air-conditioner don't stop the working. Sometimes even classroom is empty but air-conditioner is working. It is working and working. So we always say like this.
"I'm very cold!"
Maybe I think that air-conditioner feels their working is very hard. According to interview for general affairs officer, CIFLE spend 2,500,000 won for air-conditioner's electronic fee. Wow. It's surprise.
And then I want to suggest to CIFLE. We have to decrease the using air-conditioner. Then we can decrease the air-conditioner's electronic fee. And we can use the money for more effectively.
But I love the CIFLE. Even though working air-conditioner. I have many experiences in CIFLE. These experiences are made me to feel and think many thing. I believe that I grow up than before. I'm realy appreciate CIFLE program. Maybe if I go back to my dairy routine, I will miss the CIFLE.
Shine at the Cifle Library

What is your favorite place at Cifle? Me? My favorite place at Cifle is the library. The Cifle library is the one of the best places at which I spend a lot of leisure time. I usually go to the library at 7:50 in the morning and at 8:00 in the evening to read books and search for some information for class and perform the CALL lesson.
The Cifle Library has six computers with internet connection, so it is really useful to trainees. I met the librarian to find out some information about Cifle Library on Monday, August 10th. Her name is Kim Bokyeong, she is twenty five years old. This year is her first year as librarian at Cifle. She has worked here since February in 2009. Actually, supervisor Lee Hyeonju is in charge of managing the library and she helps her from 12:30 to 14:00. She says that Cifle library has over 2,000 books and 98% of them are in English. I asked who is the best and the worst person who uses library. She really likes people who arrange well after reading and return the books punctually after borrowing them. It makes sense, because last year I was in charge of my school's library and I know the difficulty of being a librarian. I asked her who is the best user among the native teachers. Her anwer was Scott, Lexi and Susan. They are really good users, so they use the library very often. She told me she really likes to work here and she loves the quiet and comfortable atmosphere of Cifle library. If the situation is permitting, she wants to work here for a long time. I hope so too. Thank you for her kind interview again.
Every morning, I go to the library with hot coffee and I have a seat and turn on the computer. After researching, I usually choose some English storybooks which have very simple, easy and fun contents. I love to read them. Sometimes, I take pictures of them to buy for my students. After this training course, I will buy many English books for my students and myself. I want to make a mini library in my classroom. I hope all my students like my mini library.
My life at Cifle is almost finished. Next Wednesday is the last day of it. When I remember Cifle, maybe I will think about Cifle library first. The Cifle library was the wonderful place for me and I was really impressed by it. In addition, it made me LOVE English storybooks.
Thank you. Bye.
A despatch teacher, eun-ji kim
My CIFLE writing topic is a despatch teacher, eun-ji kim. At first day I arrived at the CIFLE I was being introduced schedule, building, staffs including despatch teachers. Despatch teachers had been originally in formal school, but they volunteered for CIFLE program and have worked here now. Miss kim also volunteered for and has worked in CIFLE from February 2009. She is supposed to work here for one year. She usually work according to three types of daily routines.
One day camp is similar with regular section. It's being progress to attend about 70 students from 10 am to 4 pm. Native speakers and despatch teachers organize for one day camp team like the others.
Tech program is a simplified of traveling English. This program is a special thing for country side students who barely experienced English except textbook.
She always thinks that these programs are very meaningful to students especially for rural area. Because students can experienced real English situations such as role paly, listening funny story, cooking, story telling through them. They also would go through shopping at store, reservation at restaurantㆍhotel, and so on. In addition many times students recognize new phase of English and could be get a turning point of their life from these programs.
She insists they're very educational and effective. Miss kim seem to be proud of her current job.
CIFLE Makes Us Healthy
In the first place, CIFLE life give us physical healthy. The meals are very nice. It's various, delicious and fresh. I think the nutritionist must make the menu well and the cooks are good. For me CIFLE food is better than when I am in school or at home. Usally I cooked by myself at home. An addition about the meal, it is always regular here. Breakfast, lunch and dinner, we can have them on time. It's important for health. Trainee kyeong-mi said "I can take medicine regularly here because I have daily meals on time" That's the why she looks better than we met first. Also we can enjoy sports and exercising. There is fitness center on the dormitory first floor. It's available in our free time. In multi-purpose room, we can play ping-pong. As we have seen CIFLE has good living environment. Beside, natural environment is nice. Especially the air is that. If you want feel fresh and clean air take a nature walk around CIFLE in the moring. The clean and fresh air would be waiting for you. Sleeping well is important too. But don't worry. The heavy schedule will make you sleep well. Our official schedule is from 9 to 9. There is no isomnia.
In the second place CIFLE life give us mental health. We don't need to care about work of school. We don't need to think about household affairs, like 'What should I make for dinner?'. And scene of CIFEL is very nice. I mean, CIFLE is beautiful to see. I think CIFLE is located in peaceful place. Every morning I can see beautiful sunshine on the ground, trees, and the mountines. I can listen the bird's sining. It makes me happy everyday. And a planty of homework make us not fall into useless daydream. We care about homework, but it's better than being worry about any other problem like student's score at the national exam.
In the third place, we make less pollution in CIFLE. We don't need to drive a car in a day. That case protect the air. And I heard something from a trainee. She said she doesn't wash as often as before CIFLE. That case protect the water. Until here there are many benefits for our health in CIFLE. We would be healtier than before the traing when we finish the course.
Less schdule
Eventhough the room was too small as compared with my gym, it had all equipment what I wanted like a treadmill and air-condotioner. That was enough for me. For a short time, I worked out without any thought but soon I realized that there were a few people who searched for the fitnessroom . I tried to find out the reason and asked several person about the reason. According to one trainee she has no plenty time to exercise because she has lots of homework. Another trainee also said "daily schedule finish at night and I am so tired at that time for me".
I think there might be reasons definitely Cifle to prepare a fitnessroom. I want to ask Cifle manager, " Why do you build the gym? Whom do you build this gym for? Trainee or staff members?" If they built the gym for trainees, they should settle daily schedule for trainees. If they consider the tranee's health, they should settle to finish earlier dayily schedule of trainees . If they concern about their English skill, they should more encourage the tranees to use English all the time in the cifle's life instead of classes after dinner.

CIFLE's special party "Performance"
This performence was one part of Jonathan's English literature lesson. The trainees are as three group divided and each group selected one story and dramatized it for a play.
From July 21. the trainees began to take the lesson and also began to prepare the play. During 2weeks they cooperated for the preparing of the play, for example story selecting, story rewriting, devision of roles, sound effect, costume, etc. They did this work not only during the lesson, but also during the breaks and lunchtime. So their teamwork was much improved while they prepare the performance.
The tiltle of stories were like these:
Group A : Nolbu Bothers
Group B : Sun and Moon
Group C : Goldax and Silverax
Group A, they changed the old famous "Nolbu Brothers" story for modern situation. In this modernized Nolbu story, Nolbu's wife hit Heungbu's family with a golf club instead of a large flat spoon of old story It was somewhat interesting and impressing. My CIFLE Life
Who is the Best Dresser Among the CIFLE Trainers?
I have been in here CIFLE almost for three weeks. During three weeks I had to study very hard because of a lot of homeworks, projects with tight schedules. I was so tired of these things. But I found one thing for my hobby that can make me escape from tough daily routines. That is observing the Fashion of CIFLE's teachers!! We have five teachers Angie, Lexi, David, Jonathan, Chris in CIFLE. They teach us so devotedly and earnestly. There is no doubt about it. But now let's talk about their fashion.
So, who is the best dresser among the CIFLE trainers? What is the fashion point of them? Who is the worst of the fashion? And What would you advise for them?
Now These are some opinions of my class members.
Q. Who is the Best dreser ?
A. I think Lexi is the best. She is very fashionable and has a unique individuality. Mostly she wear some kinds of accessories. Especially I like her wristlet. And I like her hair too. But sometimes she need to wear like womanish. Why don't you wear short skirt, Lexi?
A. Angie is the best dresser. I like her sandals. Those are very cute and looked comfortable, too. And I like her accessories.
Q. Is there anything to advice to our trainers about their fashion?
A. David, I like you so much, but I can not endure your too big T-shirts. If you want to wear that T-shirts, why don't you wear the vertical line or stripe type? Those can help you to be looked more smaller than you are^^;; I hope you don't feel bad David. we like you very much anyway.
A. Chris, Why don't you take off the skinny jeans? Do you think that goes well with you? I'll give you a advise as your friends and students. I hope you'll wear black suit Someday!!. But you are cute, that's fine.^^ J/K.
A. Jonathan. I like your hair style. Do you wake up every morning and make that hair style? So~!! dilligent!!^^. Anyway, I like your style but sometimes you need to change your style of blue jeans and T-shirts. It'll be good if you wear the skinny pants like Chris. Both of you are good friends each other. right?^^;;
CIFLE FOOD
Cifle food how do you think? After investigating a lot of feedback that was very delicious.Your favorite food? Squid stir survey, bulgogi, tteokbokyi, fruit, everything is delicious, according to feedback.
My life in CIFLE
How often do we use our good facilities of the dormitory?
The number of trainees : 9 trainees in class B
Dormitory Building :1st to 4th floor
As the result, the most popular facility was a toilet because it's located in the same floor with a cafeteria, on the 1st floor, trainees often go there before or after meal. It's common that toilets are popular so this result was not interesting. The second popular facility was a laundry room and over half trainees use this facility. They were all female. When I went there several times all three laundry machines were working but none of male laundry room's. As trainees don't have spare time facilities like TV lounge, fitness room and outdoor lounge are under used. Whereas A/V room and study room are used more. Trainees tell, "I'd like to use fitness room but I have no time." According to the result, trainees should be given more spare times so that they can use various of facilities. Making English environment for those facilities will let trainees have fun with English.
Visit If You Want to Speak English
First, Library can be read books comfortable at any time. there are many books. It has a lot of English books for children and teachers. I read a book for storytelling.
I study in here with my foreign teacher and my classmates.
Second, I can research on Computer about all of informationat the multimedia room. there are many Computer. I am doing my PBL homework about fermented foods. You can use this room anytime if you want to.
In addition to the auditorium, cafeteria, dormitoryfitness room etc... there's a lot of facilities.
CIFLE is clean and equipped with the newest facilities as it has not passed so long time since it was built. CIFLE is really a great institute; transportation is advanced, and both the education and the entire environment is the best. many excellent teachers are attending in CIFLE every vacation. and there are also good foreign teachers who teach the excellent teachers.
I know that the people in CIFLE are friendly and good-looking.
I really recommend it as a CIFLE where you can speak English very well.
A good experience
Anyway, I entered CIFLE. Regular life at CIFLE will be became a life-changing moment for me. I expect that. Now, the end of this course approaches. I feel so sorry about that. A few weeks at CIFLE was very special and fantastic period to me. Also, The CIFLE life was very hard to me. I couldn't understood foreign teacher's lecture. Their speech was very fast and used long sentence. I try to understand, but it was difficult too. There are several good English classmates, I was embarrassed because of difference to abilities with them. Although I entered CIFLE voluntarily, but that was so hard to me.
I was surprised that foreign teachers have a broad knowledge and teaching techniques. Actually, I met several foreign teachers at the school as my colleague, but I thought that they are not fit for elementary school teacher. They can't understand the Korean students and they have lack of teaching skills. They are just good English. But, I could feel that CIFLE's teacher are passionate in their work. It is very fortunate.
Jonathan is very friendly to us, sometimes he had a joke but I can't understand that. After this training course he will be leaving to travel to Laos. He teaches CBL, performance. David He is a writer with humanism. He wrote two books about he and his family. He teaches idioms and drama. Alexis looks like a kindergarten teacher and she teaches language activities and public speaking. Angie has a very delicate nature and she teaches team-teaching and micro-teaching. Christopher is similar to college teachers and he teaches writing and debate. I respect everybody's passion.
At CIFLE, I have to take a class all day from 9 a.m to 9 p.m. And I have to do special task using extra time. Also I should be doing school work. And I have to spend with my family over the weekend. Although life in CIFLE was very busy and hard, I will never forget. This training course was a good experience for me.
Are you satisfied with the food at CIFLE?
28 elementary school teachers are in the intensive English program here in Gong-ju.
They study all week at CIFLE and every weekend they go to their own homes.
To live far from their family and comfortable atmosphere is not easy for the teachers but almost all of them volunteered for this program by themselves to improve their English teaching skills.
However, the most important thing is not studying English but keeping their health conditions up.
Therefore we should eat regularly with the balanced nutritious food.
Good nutrition is important for good health.
In my case, except for several meals I am satisfied with the food but I wanted to listen to the other trainees’ opinions as well.
I interviewed one of the trainees.
She answered, “I am not satisfied with every meal because it’s too salty. I don’t like salty food at all.”
The other trainee said, “I am tired of Kimchi soup. Too many times I must eat it and, furthermore, it is not delicious.”
And then I met several more trainees.
Most of them are satisfied with the food but they had some demands of our nutritionist.
To sum up, the trainees want to eat fruit more frequently, they think that side dishes are a little bit salty, so please add less salt. Also, they are tired of Kimchi soup.
CIFLE is really a useful place to study English because it has many convenient accommodations and trainees concentrate just on studying English.
What a good chance it is!
Trainees, enjoy your meals, utilize all the useful accommodations and do your best in studying English!
Effective Native English Teacher Management
There are about 240 native English teachers in elementary schools in Chungnam. About 430 elementary schools are located in Chungnam. Sometimes one teacher is working in several schools. And in most schools native English teachers are teaching with Korean teachers, in other words, they are co-teaching . To become an English teacher, they need a college degree, and sometimes a TESOL and TEFL license certificate.
2. Are you satisfied with English lesson with your native English teacher?

The survey results of satisfaction measurement on "Co-teaching"
The results of this survey show that many teachers gave positive responses to the questions such as 'both teachers agree on the goals of the class,' 'All materials are shared in the classroom,''Comunication is open and honest.' 'Both teachers share curriculum resources: audio, video, books and texts. Behavior management is the shared responsibility of both teachers.
But by following these questions, we found the teachers showed relatively low satisfaction measurements: 'I feel comfortable in the classroom with my co-teacher in the classroom', 'Planning for the classes is the shared responsibility of both teachers,' 'We hold meetings and give honest feedback about lessons.'
In other words, this result says that, generally, native English-speaking teachers and Korean English teacher are co-working well, but at the same time the Korean English-teachers feels sometimes uncomfortable and burdened. Particularly, they don't have effective classes because they don't have enough common time for the lesson planning before classe and feedback after class. So, far more effective "co-teaching", both teachers's before and after collaboration is needed.
So, we had to interview Kang Min-Jung who is working at Baek-Suk Elementary School in Chun-An, she is teaching with a native English teacher. This is the interview with her.
Q. Do you have a good relationship with your native teacher?
A. Of course we do.
Q.She helps you a lot?
A. Yes, she helps a lot and we help each other. We spend much time talking about the lesson.
Q. How she can help you?
A. She can help me when I am busy because there are children who need more concentration and need help. She walks around the class and checks student's activities to give them assistance to solve the problems.
Q. If you have some conflicts about the lesson, how can you deal with it?
A. We have the same lesson 10 times a week. So if we feel bad about the lesson we deal with these procedures. We share our ideas then we change the lesson plan. We have enough time for conversation about the lesson. And then, finally, we teach the students perfectly. There is no conflict. We just share ideas and choose the better one.
Q. Do you think that we can provide better English lessons for our students by utilizing native English teachers in our public schools?
A. Yes, we can!
According to her interview, she is very satisfied with her native English teacher. They have a lot of time to prepare for good lessons. And if there are some problems with each other they would rather spend enough time conversing to figure it out than ignore the arguments.
But there are some difficulties in our English class with native English teacher.
Our School's Teachers and Students Are Not Satisfied With English Lesson With Native English Teachers.
In Our school, homeroom teachers teach English to their students. They are complaining about native teacher and team teaching. The result is that, English teachers can't provide effective English lessons to their students.
The reasons are the following:
First, between Korean teacher and native English teacher there is not enough communication. Korean teachers are not good at English listening and speaking, they can't communicate with native English teacher. Our work can't be deeply satisfying and we can't achieve a great deal. we find our native English teacher difficult to deal with and teamwork is plagued with conflict, work quickly becomes stressful and unpleasant. Native English teacher almost always teach English lessons and Korean teachers are only monitoring. Students have difficult its with the English lessons and they can't improve their English skills. Korean teachers should improve their English skills.
Second, there are problems with the native English teacher's character and looks. He is taciturn. He is very fat and wears dirty clothes, that smell bad. So our school's teacher and students can't spend friendly times with him. Elementary students receive a lot influence form English teachers. When they like him, they can like the English lesson. Korean teachers and native English teacher should make an effort to solve these problems.
3. What are the conflicts between Korean teacher and native English teacher?
For the question, "What is the most difficult point in your co-teaching with your native English teacher?"
The answer is as follows:

I have problems in communicating with a native English teacher in class (9%, 9 persons), ② I have problems in regulating different teaching methods in class (16%, 17 persons), ③ I have problems with spending too long a time in preparing materials (26%, 28 persons), ④ I have problems with making the native English teacher understand Korean culture and mentality (18%, 19 persons), ⑤ I wonder whether native English teachers have the basic qualifications for teaching (10%, 10 persons), ⑥ I have problems with managing related works with native English teachers (4%, 4 persons), ⑦ no problem (4%, 4 persons), ⑧ other. (10%, 11 persons), no response(3%, 3persons)
The results of this survey show that Korean English teachers have various problems with co-teaching with their native English teachers. The most frequent response was "I have a problem with spending too much time on preparing materials". This response shows that Korean English teachers cannot afford much time on preparing materials because of other responsibilities. The next problem was about the misunderstanding between cultures and the differences in teaching methods. We can see that, this problem of communication is caused by the Korean English teacher's poor English. We can see that influencing students negatively by this response of 10% ‘I wonder whether a native English teacher has the basic qualifications of a teacher’. The "No problem" response of 4% shows that most Korean English teachers have many problems. the problems as co-teacher were caused by the conditions of the school and the teacher's individual examples; concern for English, the view point of English, English speaking ability, basic qualities and characteristics of native English teachers.
4. What is the effective native teacher management?

(A New Challenge : A Fresh Insight into TEE, Page : 12~16)
Your relationships with your native English teacher are important. Good working relationships can help them do their job better. Also Korean teachers can teach English very well with native English teachers. Elementary students can pronounce with precision and learn well in the effective TEE environment with native teacher's teaching.
Therefore, effective native teacher management is important. Here are some effective ways to manage native English teachers.
First, between Korean teachers and native English teachers conversations should become converse smooth. Smooth conversation is important, because those who can understand their thoughts and goals through conversation. They should discuss lesson plans and students. To achieve objective, they should make an effort together. Otherwise, English lessons can't achieve their objective.
Second, it is necessary for colleagues to respect each other. Respect is the foundation of all good relationships. Do your best to avoid offending those with whom you work.
Third, it is necessary to understand each other's personal values. You can let others know what your values are by speaking about them. Knowing what's important to others and yourself will avoid unnecessary conflicts.
Fourth, it is necessary to have an open-mind. We should appreciate culture and receive opinions with an open-mind to each other. Also, we should show friendliness, We can smile because it is the simplest act for showing friendliness. Make others feel your warmth by offering help and kind words. Give praise and appreciate their efforts.
This is interview with Angie who is trainer of CIFLE.
The following is her interview. She talks about what is the effective native English teachers management and what is the result after effective English native teacher's management. As you can hear, she emphasizes the effort of each Korean teacher and native teacher. Both people have to be open minded and understand each other and be willing to listen about their culture and work. If we are stubborn about our own culture and unwilling to learn or listen, we are only showing ourselves to be amateuristic and unprofessional. And she also tells us about the result of effective native English management. She offers advice to the two teachers so they can learn to communicate like professionals and compromise if they have differences in opinions and ideas.
5. What is result after effective native English teacher management?
Now, let's listen to Miss Kim's(Supervisor of CIFLE) opinion.
We asked her what is the most important thing for our English class with a native English teacher. She wants to tell us why we invited a native English teacher to our public elementary schools. And, also, she emphasized that we have to improve our communicative competence for utilizing native English teachers. It means they can provide authentic materials and native English teachers should try to expose our students to the materials. It means that native teachers not only have responsibilities for the lesson but also that Korean teacher have to give support to the native teacher as best we can.
6. conclusion
While we perform our PBL assignment, we concluded that effctive management of native English teachers for English lessons of high quality are the following.
Firstly, they need to try to converse so that they understand each other. The reason that they don't have conversations is difficult to have smooth conversations with the language barrier. Therefore, Korean English teachers should improve their English skills to converse with Native English teachers smoothly.
Secondly, Native English teachers should try to understand their students and the Korean culture. And, they should learn about teaching methods for elementary students because they are teaching Korean students. So the office of education need to change the Native English teachers' selection systems. They should select Native English teachers who have experience with elementary teachers or who major to pedagogy. They have to manage and support Native English teachers constantly and they have to provide organized training programs.
Thirdly, Korean teachers and native English teachers keep good relationships. They should discuss their English lesson plans and give feedback. So they can try to make successful English lessons together.
Finally, Native English teachers feel a comparative sense of alienation and feel lonely in a foreign country. So their colleagues should provide warmth and kindness to the Native English teachers.
We expect that the English education in our elementary school will be very much lightened.
